About reusable instrument hardware The defining constraint on a reusable is not what it does once. It is what it survives being cleaned, a few hundred times.
Reprocessing sets the material list
Repeated exposure to cleaning chemistry, heat and steam eliminates a great many materials that would otherwise be reasonable choices. That constraint usually arrives before the functional one.
It also sets the geometry. Blind holes, narrow gaps and captured cavities are hard to clean and harder to prove clean, so a design that cannot be validated for cleaning is not a design regardless of how well it works.
Machined parts and tolerance
Most instrument hardware is turned, milled or both. Cost is driven less by the tolerance itself than by how many features carry a tight one — a single tight bore is routine, and a stack of tight features that must hold relative to each other is not.
Where a mechanism has to survive reprocessing, clearances usually open up rather than tighten, because thermal cycling and deposits are more likely to seize a fit than wear is to loosen it.
Standards that actually apply
- ISO 17664
- Information to be provided by the manufacturer for processing a medical device. If a device is reusable, this is the one that says what the instructions must cover.
- ISO 17665
- Moist heat sterilisation — validation and routine control.
Listed because they bear on the choices above — not as a compliance checklist, and not as advice about which apply to your device.
