About cannulae and points A needle is a tube and a point, and the two are specified almost independently of each other.
The tube
Hypodermic tubing is specified by gauge, which fixes an outer diameter, and by wall — regular, thin or extra-thin — which is what actually sets the lumen. Two needles of the same gauge can have usefully different flow.
Gauge is a legacy series rather than a formula, so it is looked up rather than calculated. Working from the ID requirement backwards to a gauge and wall is usually the faster route.
The point
Grind geometry sets penetration force and what the tissue does as the needle passes. A lancet is the general-purpose grind; back-bevels and trocar points exist because specific procedures need a specific behaviour at first contact.
Point geometry is also where burr and edge quality matter most, and it is the feature most likely to be the real subject of an incoming complaint.
Standards that actually apply
- ISO 7864
- Sterile hypodermic needles for single use.
- ISO 9626
- Stainless steel needle tubing — the dimensional and mechanical requirements the tube itself has to meet.
